Parker County folks take the domino game of “42” very seriously. And why shouldn’t they? The game was invented right here! The annual Gabe Vick Memorial “42” Tournament will commence at Texas Bank Financial at 8:30 on July 9th as part of the Parker County Peach Festival.
Event organizer Dave Cowley, said registrations start coming in June. “People want to get in, get registered and know they’ve got a spot to play.” Cowley said, 42 brings competition to a whole new level. “You thought the World Cup was competitive? It’s got nothing on this game. It’s almost as much fun to watch as it is to play, as we have contestants in their 20’s to 90’s. We’ll have fathers and sons, mothers with granddaughters and lifelong friends’ team up for this event. It runs the gamut.”
Garner friends William Albert Thomas and Walter Earle are credited with creating the game during the summer of 1887 in Thomas’ family’s barn. The game is based on a predecessor of 42, Whist, and was formulated because the boys were not allowed to play cards. The rules were tweaked and the game eventually spread across the globe.
Check-in begins at 8:00 Saturday morning, July 9th. Coffee and doughnuts will be served as Judges go over the rules and assign seating. The tournament begins at 8:30 and will run until about 11:30. Trophies are awarded to the top 3 places as well as cash prizes.
Slots at the domino table are still available but the field is limited to 14 two-person teams. Registration is $5 per person. Texas Bank Financial is located at 901 Santa Fe Drive in Weatherford. For more information, call Dave Cowley at (817) 596-9998.
