Mar. 1- August 1 – Bison bison: The Magnificent Beast of the American Plains
Before the coming of the Europeans, great herds of bison, perhaps as many as 30,000,000 animals, roamed the Great Plains from the frozen forests of the Northwest Territories in Canada to present-day Mexico - the largest gathering of land mammals in history. This exhibit reflects on the Native peoples who hunted the buffalo, the ecology of the Plains, the coming of the Europeans, the near extermination of the buffalo, and efforts in the 20th century to rescue these noble animals. It’s a fascinating story! Dave Sherrill has graciously loaned a large, mounted buffalo head and full mounted gray wolf (chief predator of the buffalo other than man) for this exhibit. Free admission. Museum of the Americas, 216 Fort Worth Hwy. 817-341-8668.Hours Tues-Friday 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday 11 am to 4 pm.
